The whole world.

I bought this Replogle vintage globe at the Goodwill for $2.99. So what if it still maps the USSR?

Just like a circus.

August 22, 2009

Happy weekend everyone! I just bought this print. Clearly I have a thing for orange and an even bigger thing for schnauzers. I’m going to pretend that’s Oliver levitating Mr. Spencer.

I would really love to order the rest in the circus theme, but alas, that will have to be another day.

I have worked in the newspaper industry since I was in junior high. Did you know that? My day job consists of pica’s, Quark, intense deadlines and stacks and stacks of newsprint. So you can only imagine how many papers I’ve been storing over the years.

When I was Editor in Chief of my college paper, I would literally save an entire bundle of my school’s weekly paper. Ya know, just in case my soon-to-be future employer needed say … 30 copies of October 12th’s edition. So clearly, I was disillusioned and came to find out, as a graphic designer, I don’t need hard copies of anything really, just a PDF.

I ended up purging many stacks that I had accumulated after 15 years in the biz, especially when I made the leap from reporter to designer. (And I’ve never looked back, either!)

I now keep one copy of extra special pieces, from freelance jobs, special issues or something that I won an award for. I keep them folded (most are broadsheet, but I currently work for a tabloid) in the KASSETT boxes from Ikea. They are not ideal. I’ve had to fold, push, shove, etc. all to get them to fit in there.

Well yesterday, I found myself looking at Orgazine.com. Low and behold, they have the ideal contraption for me to use, the Euro™ Newspaper Holder.

Then I dug a little deeper into my online research, only to discover that The Container Store also keeps one in stock, but about $10 more. Being the thrifty gal that I am, I kept looking for something less expensive.

That’s when I discovered the Bristol Newspaper Bin, on sale for $15! So long story short, I think I’m going to swing over there after work today and grab three, because I love multiples of three in design, but also because of how short they are. I can’t wait to un-smuch many hours of hard work and make them all pretty again.

Too cool for school.

I must check out Little Bean, this cute little boutique over in Junius Heights. Yes, it’s a kid’s shop, and no I’m not “with child.” But it looks like they have a ton of fun accessories that adults can love, too!

Like these Presidential Pillows:

Aren’t they charming?

Cheers.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of bar stools. Mostly because I don’t like the look of a pass-thru bar in the kitchen (it looks so apartment-ish), but also because of the actual square footage the stools take up, when I most likely would never seat there in the first place. Basically they just seem like wasted space, and from what I’ve seen out there, are typically tacky in design.

That was all until now.

These lab stools have caught my eye and now I’m salivating over them, dreaming of my next apartment to please, please have a bar. And at a modest $35, I could get three! Wouldn’t that be lovely?

I’ve run across School Outfitters many times of blogs. I go there, think how much fun all of that mass produced goodness would look too clever in a home, but then close it and forget all about it. Not this time.

Because I would love these each and everyday. And hopefully even have a meal there once in a while.

20×200

August 19, 2009

20×200 is this creative little site and gallery on the Lower East Side of New York.

What makes this gallery so special? They commission really, really affordable prints from all sorts of artists. I mean really, truly affordable. Not In Style‘s definition of affordable, but my definition of affordable.

All of the pieces range from three prices. The smallest (usually 8×10) is $20, the second is $50 and the largest is $200. And the large print is HUGE!

But the best part is that they are are printed in limited numbers, so the one you get is pretty darn unique. Not too shabby, if I say so myself.

Warning: I’m going to geek out on this one. So if photography, vintage and technology aren’t your thing, feel free to skip this post.

I’ve been wanting a small digital video camera for awhile now. I purchased one for my Dad at Christmas last year. It wasn’t top of the line, far from it in fact, but it does the job and makes him happy. Well, most of the time. It’s actually got a pretty confusing menu.

Call me a hipster or whatever. I won’t take offense when I say this: I’ve been yearning for a Holgo. Well, any kind of retro camera, really. Holga’s capture the most dreamy effects that you just can’t fake in Photoshop.

Just look how amazing this is.

So when I ran across this litte guy, I have to admit that I’m pretty excited. The Digital Harinezumi Video Camera combines both of what I’m looking for. It not only takes those low-quality pictures I crave, but also does equally low quality digital film. Score!

Here’s a cute YouTube that Urban Outfitters did that captures that “quality” I want.

Now to wait for it to actually be available here in the U.S. You can pre-order on UO, but I want it now! Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock. (Can you hear my impatience?)

Muy Bueno.

August 18, 2009

I popped over to La Mariposa on Henderson today, after grabbing a bite from Fish City Grill. (One of my favorite lunch stops in Dallas, btw.)

There were so many party decorations; everything from hand-cut banners (like in the photo above, sombreros and a pinata for any occasion.

I loved the bride. Can you imagine this at your wedding?

IMG_2192

They have these fabulous paper roses, around four bucks each. There were so many colors … loved it. I want to go back and get maybe three or five of the cyan. But I told myself before I make an impulse buy, I need to actually have some where to put them first!

IMG_2188

But the small space isn’t just fiesta supplies. No, no. That’s just the icing on the tres leches!

It’s packed full with a bit of something for everyone. They have an exquisite selection of authentic Oaxacan dresses. Prices ranged, but most were $150. I don’t think they work for my figure and when I said I needed a belt with mine, the sales woman assured me how awful that would look! We both laughed.

IMG_2190

And of course Frida made several appearances. She was on everything from refrigerator magnets, to this tote.

IMG_2191

But the best of the best where their imported textiles, like the Otom bed spreads. Words can’t describe how much I wanted this little gem. But the price tag ($395) and the fact that it only came in a queen (I have a king) preventing me from purchasing. :(

IMG_2193

But quite possibly my favorite items where the hand embroidered pillows. With cute phrases in Spanish and some TexMex, they were pretty much everything I love about Dallas. I am budgeting for the larger one in the back that has the pair of doves and reads, “Bueno Noches.” I mean, where else are you going to find these?

IMG_2194

If you’ve always driven by the bright pink store, but never dropped in, I say why wait? And as they informed me, everything is online and available to purchase, so if you aren’t in the Dallas area, you can still get your fix here.

Stunning.

August 17, 2009

The good news: I fell in love immediately with this necklace when I came across it on Etsy’s homepage. It is quite possibly the most stunning thing I’ve seen on here.

il_430xN.84423019

The bad news
: I left the tab open, went to actually purchase it, but less than 15 minutes later, it was gone!

However, I’m really digging this one and might or might not be in the process of commissioning another one like it, but in teal. ;)

Check out Tijusai’s shop if you dare. But I warn you: she’ll make you bust out the debit card!

This makes me sad.

August 12, 2009

Although this was obviously filmed before April 2007 by the Dallas Morning News Online Video Journalism, this is such an interesting and honest look at what is currently happening to Deep Ellum.

Having moved to Bryan Place that same month, the underground tunnel was long gone and I think about it almost every time I drive above it pass the brand new Dart station. Let’s all hope the new Green Line makes some significant changes to this historic neighborhood.

Because I’d just be heart broken if Twisted Root had to shut its doors.
