Schlepping it to IKEA

March 15, 2009

I’ve been on pins and needles, eagerly awaiting the moment I could finally hang up my latest poster. I purchased a screen print of a Colin Meloy show from vrsdesign’s Etsy shop a few weeks ago. Since then, I haven’t had a chance to schlep over to IKEA, as I’ve had one obligation after another every weekend.

But finally(!) I’ve had a chance to get out there today, with my good friend Raquel and her daughter Zoe. The unfortunate problem was that they were all out of the exact RIBBA frame I wanted, so I had to settle on a larger one that doesn’t quite fit the print.

No bother though. I flipped the back around and it serves as a slightly modern looking back of pressed wood. It’s not too bad, but it probably won’t stay like that.

Lately, I’ve been embracing my obsessive nature. Like currently I have a major crush on poster designs … especially of bands I love. I think it’s a craft that is overlooked and I’m discovering some of the best graphic designers out there, creating hand-drawn fonts and completely unique illustrations. I’m ordering these double prints of a Shins gig from Tad Carpenter, an awesome illustrator I found via Twitter.

PS: I love Twitter! You should really get one. If you do, find me @STUDIO67.

Have a super rest of the weekend. I’ll be working at the paper (boo) designing a zillion ads all day. Come visit if you want to! Yeah right … :)

Inspiration is everywhere

Sorry it’s been so long! I hope you haven’t been on the edge of you seat waiting for what clever things Kristina will blog about today. Okay, I know that’s sooooo not true, but I do apologize for not updating this site more. I need to be more on top of it.

I wanted to geek out for a bit and share with you my latest obsession: the font Rockwell. It’s just so gorgeous, simple, vintage, etc. I haven’t had such a major crush on a font in awhile.

Here it is in the window of Gap at Northpark. Such pretty colors.

My good friend Chance recently moved into a studio apartment over in the Medical District and has been purging a lot of his lovely belonging. I’ve taken advantage of as much as I can; we even had a garage sale together.

But when he talked about getting rid of some vintage pottery, I knew exactly which cups and saucers he was speaking of, as I’d been enviously eying them every time I came over.

harkerware-1Clearly I like toast, with all the crumbies. Please ignore.

He handed my a box of six cups and matching saucers in a gorgeous robin’s egg blue, with a matching serving dish to boot. They are made by Harkerware, “Since 1840″ and were made here in America. I can’t find much history on the brand. It’s not even on Wikipedia. (I know!)

But I’ve found a ton of pieces for bid on eBay and for sale on vintage shops through Etsy, like these Seafare Salad Plates I would really like to order to match. He remembered purchasing them from an antique store in Bowie, Texas when he moved into his first apartment. I also feel the need to state that he “schlepped them across the country” several times, as he kept telling me over and over. :)

Long story short: I think they are gorgeous and wanted to share with you because they are too pretty not too!

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’m on a redecorating kick. I’ve really been enjoying it. (Especially in the bedroom, for some reason.) It feels nice to have new things and a weight being lifted, as the old leaves ship. Maybe it’s a cleansing or something, or maybe I’m just a shopping addict. Quite frankly, tt’s most likely the latter. :)

Well, it turns out redecorating is expensive!

And in these economic times (and I mean literally I’ve been quite affected) I’m on a bigger budget than I’ve realized. So I’m being resourceful and getting tips from my favorite blogs like Apartment Therapy, Design*Sponge, Making It Lovely and my favorite, Door Sixteen.

These ladies can often transform something ordinary into something quite unique. And it reminds me of how creative I was back in my high school and college days, where Grandma would give me some ’80s gold-leafed candlestick holder and I would go to town and paint it some funky color with my leftovers from art class.

In any case, I was at the store and wondered into the paint aisle, where all of the pretty colors seemed so appealing. Just as I thought, “I want to go to there,” I ended up with these in my basket:

Later in the day, I was trying to figure out what to do with them while taking Oliver out for a quick walk and found some ’80s gold-leafed lamp and thought, “Um … destiny!”

I grabbed the Blue Ocean Breeze spray paint, which I’ve classically dubbed ‘Tiffany Blue,’ as it goes quite well with my new duvet cover I picked up at Ikea a month or some ago. I even found a random box by the trash shoot (also Ikea … weird!) and used it to cover my patio furniture as I painted away.

I ended up with this:

The shade is from another lamp I had on the nightstand and isn’t really what I want to use, but it will do for now. You also might notice that I broke down and bought four Orla Kiely Coasters, because darlings, no matter how messy I can be, “Coaster Rule” is always in effect at Kristina’s casa.

Peace and love!

I know you peeps don’t care, but this is just about the hottest song ever. It’s messy and chaotic and doesn’t follow any particular formula … much like life.
