Addiction

January 30, 2009

It comes in so many forms. Lately for me, it’s Etsy, Art Fire, THIS RAD SITE and Twitter. Are you on? It’s really quite genius. Forget Facebook and Myspace: it’s all about the tweets!

Busy weekend plans: meeting with a client tomorrow, making a trek to Grapevine and Raquel’s work … then off to North Dallas to have a creative meeting with Alyssa. Hosting Tara’s baby shower Saturday for 30+ ladies, a bridesmaid appointment on Sunday and the Superbowl (which I could care less about, with the exception of the hotness that is Kurt Warner), all with my good friend Shannon in town, whom I hope I can squeeze some quality time in with. Whew! Breathe!

I also have arecent addiction to hot tea, which I'm drinking in the uber-cool mug I found in the cabinet at work.

WHERE I SPEND 40+ HOURS A WEEK SITTING: I also have a recent addiction to hot tea, which I'm drinking in the uber-cool mug I found in the cabinet at work.

Ah … the power of the carbon copy.

A part of me wants to e-mail the Realtor and say, “Please stop sending us listings of houses. We don’t even live in the same city anymore, let alone need to be CC’ed on an email together!”

Another part of me secretly loves them, as it’s pretty much the only singular connection I have to a certain someone.

Note to Future Kristina: flag as Junk Mail.

Oak Cliff People grabbed a great picture of Chris, Chance and myself at the Oak Cliff Young Professionals gathering at Kavala. I was there representing my company Studio 67 and had forgot to bring biz cards with me. (Must have on my check list for next month!) Luckily, I had my Dallas Voice peeps there to back me up.

Not that any of my readers listen (or obsess, in my case) to The Decemberists, but they have released a free download of their newest single, The Rake’s Song from their soon-to-be-released rock-opera, The Hazards of Love. It’s reminiscent of their older discs, harder and less predictable than The Crane Wife and is just heaven to my ears.

If you’re a fan and don’t know about the freebie yet, you are welcome. If you are questioning who this band is … well, you are a fool. Get on board bitch — Colin Meloy and the gang will change your life, I swear!

Wha? Get it here.

Hope, Change, Progress … Yes We Can

And we did today. I couldn’t be happier. And I think by the crowd size, neither could America!

I believe in you.

January 18, 2009

Yikes! January 31 is quickly approaching … me and several of my gal pals are hosting a baby shower for my very pregnant friend Tara. Her nursery is precious, not the typical pastel pink room for a little girl. She’s doing a lady bug theme, with lots of reds, blacks and whites.

I created an invitation for the shower, trying hard to recreate the theme she chose. But I’ve realized I am not the least bit crafty. I envy the Martha Stewart’s and Pink Loves Brown kinda girls. It’s just not me. I’m not good at cutting things into straight lines, tying pretty bows, etc.

But with the help of Diane, her mother and Raquel, we created some pretty sweet invitations. I purchased my supplies at Paper Source, inside NorthPark Center. It’s quickly becoming my new fav. store. :)

Initially I had planned on using a red A7 Flat Card, but thought once you added the copy to the paper, it might be difficult to read. After spending more that an hour there, taking in all my options, I scrapped that and ended up getting the paper in Superfine White.

Unfortunately, my laser printer is only black ink, so I knew I was limited on color. I decided to go with a belly band in a quirky red and white polka dot paper and red ribbon to tie it together. They were glued on the back, so the bands would not slip.

Not too good with math, I didn’t purchase enough of the red A7 envelopes, so about seven people got a generic (and admittedly ill-fitting) envelope. I’m sorry!

All in all, I’m pleased with how my first real craft project turned out. It’s even got me thinking how much fun it would to do more invitations in the future. Um … I’ll let you know!

The basics: paper, paper cutter, ribbon, glue and a hole punch.

The 12×12 sheets were cute into four 3-inch bands.

invite-3
The invites were designed by yours truly and printed at home on my Brother 7820N.

The bands were then folded and hole-punched and a 6-inch ribbon was added.

And viola! Little lady bug invitations!

Congrats to Tara and Kyle. I can’t wait to meet baby Riley February 21!

January 17, 2009

I have a multitude of project (literally) stacked up in a corner of my living room. They glare at me: as I’m leaving for work, getting home from working, slaving away on the computer all day and finally turning off the lights at night. It’s a constant reminder of what I want to do in life, what I want to be and who I want to end up as.

The project range from painting on neat-o linen paper I found, to fixing up my portfolio and making it all fancy, to meeting with Alyssa so we can finally start our design business together.

Well I can at least check off one thing on that list. (And by the way, that was the very short version of my list!) We are finally getting together to talk shop tomorrow and I couldn’t be more excited. I feel like things are on the edge of changing. My business in picking up, as is hers. A good time to leave our full time jobs, no?

Okay, maybe not just yet for me, but it’s getting close! Without going into the boring details of starting a studio, it’s going to be a ton of work, but we’re ready!

Meh

Whenever I log into WordPress, Spencer immediately decides to take a nap on my keyboard. I think he might be bored by my blogging.

January 15, 2009

these last two days have been exhausting. it’s amazing how much one person can effect me. i hate it to my core.

i’m not looking for a quick fix; i’m looking for my “click” moment, where i can say “fuck it. i’m done” and really mean it. where is that moment? i read about other people having it. even that subway dude had it. when is it my turn?

if you don’t know postsecret, you are simply missing out.

onmyway

this girl is doing something that i dream of and it’s inspiring …yet i know running away won’t solve anything. but it sure as hell would be a good distraction in the meantime.

sorry if this didn’t make sense to you. it does to me though.

i leave you with this video, which says the opposite of everything i currently think.

Two for one

January 13, 2009

Seven months ago, I moved. And about a month later, I decided to leave Texas. I started making inventory of what I was keeping, what I wasn’t … sold a ton of my decor at our GAYrage sale in the OC and was pretty much mentally cleaning house. I wasn’t in my usual decorating mood, not buying things that I would “just have to move” and everything just sorta of stayed … the same.

BORING!

I can’t stand it. Plus add the fact that I’m most likely here in Texas for a longer stay than originally planned, means I’ve been in the mood to shop. But here’s the problem – I’m in transition. I hate how I’ve decorated for the last several years. It was all jewel tones and red: like a World Market and Pier One threw up in there. I blame it working in model homes through college. I would just sit in huge McMansion in Frisco and think that it was the shit. I’m so sick of it. It’s just typical and suburban. Very, well, Frisco …

So I’m all about bright, graphic prints currently (which I design with all day long) so it’s really no wonder that it would eventually roll over into my home. Love it, can’t get enough of white space, a modern damask or an over-sized flourish. So a very long story short, I’m redoing my bathroom first! :)

Here’s what’s hanging currently:

shower-curtain-for-realz1
(I apologize for the grossly-colored “bathroom photo.”)

I bought the current shower curtain on the cheap when we needed something asap, after a bird died in our ceiling and maggots fell into the shower (no joke, and it was Halloween to boot!) It was literally the first and only dark brown shower curtain I could find the next day. I can’t remember where it came from, maybe Macy’s? It then made it’s way to the spare bathroom at my last apartment, where I barely looked at it for the next year. So now it’s in my only bathroom and I have to stare at it’s hideousness every single morning.

So here’s the dilemma – I’ve found two curtains that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! (And purchased, in a selfish moment.)

The first is from Target, gorgeous, with a dark brown fabric and flocked (velvet) teal dots, arranged in a unique pattern. It’s something I would always buy, but would blend in to the colors I have no. No muss, no fuss.

The second is a bright, bold pattern from Crate&Barrel. It has what I’m looking for: three colors to pull from and decorate with, light and airy and made of a supeir cotton-blend. It was also on sale (score!), and actually cheaper than the one from Target.

I just don’t know! I really need you peeps to decide for me, k? That would be so helpful. Maybe then, I’ll finally know which I truly prefer. And I can take the other back with in the return period!
