Google makes me cry

Should a Google commercial really bring tears to my eyes? Maybe it’s the Frenchie vibe … Maybe because it a lovey month … Or maybe it’s that darn piano making me feel something …

Either way, it’s sweet and just about the only thing I’ll remember about the Superbowl this year, when we both paused from chatting and sat and watched this.

Death by chocolate?

Well be still my heart (literally) as I walked past a grouping of anatomically correct chocolate hearts. It turns out these organs, and other surprising shapes, are hand-crafted by Chocolate by Mueller, a very quirky little shop in the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.

The old-fashioned chocolatiers have created anything and everything a tad on the eccentric side.

And I was immediately. in. love.

Chocolate lungs! My favorite.

Chocolate mice!

Chocolate noses!

Chocolate teeth!

And finally a chocolate legal set … I promised the boyfriend I would present him with this silliness once he’s graduated from law school.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

They also sold a variety of other candied goods from: (you guessed it) chocolate covered pretzels, truffles (my weakness!) and lollipops the size of my backseat.

(Loved the packaging on these …)

Happy early Valentines, y’all! Perhaps this will give you a few ideas of what I’d like what your love would like. The best part? It’s all available to order online. Click on Fun and Weird Chocolate Molds for the good stuff!

Flip Flip Flipadelphia

Okay, so the whole Flipadelphia thing really gets stuck in my head, but now for good reason.

Burr! We are in the City of Brotherly love this week. (Actually we took off this past weekend, but I wrote the post a bit early.) The boyfriend and I have never been to Philadelphia, so we’re off exploring all that this HUGE city has to offer.

We’re most excited to see one of the many law schools that Daniel has been accepted to and do the more traditional touristy stuff like the Liberty Bell and a few museums such as the National Constitution Center and Philadelphia Museum of Art.

But what’s most exciting (to me, at least) is how creative the city is! Not only do they have loads and loads of art pieces and sculptures around every corner, but they are currently hosting Philagrafika, numero uno on my agenda. It’s one of the most impressive art events focused on all things print-related. I’m ear to ear, just giddy to see some of the artists that The Print Shop is hosting and peruse all of the design goodness.

Hopefully I’ll come back with my camera full, a little more inspired and some big ol’ decisions made. We’ll see …

Yo, Yo, Yo

Yo-yo’s are just about the easiest thing to make, so I thought I’d whip up a broach for my black coat while watching a Friends DVD marathon. Somehow in the middle of everything, it turned it into a necklace!

I really, really just love this Patricia fabric from Ikea … and bought four yards months ago and needed to make use of it. The chain was from another necklace that was a tad on the short side so I split it in half and attached it to my yo-yo corsage.

It’s a pretty big and bold necklace and I kinda love it. I might even add buttons to the center of each later, since I left the edges ragged. I think it would be great if I could find the same color of burnt yellow.

Cardigan Girls

Much like Liz Lemon’s wardrobe, I regularly rock a cardigan, oh say … about 90 percent off the time. Seriously, it’s ridiculous how many colors, shapes and lengths I have piled about, within my tiny closet. They are no doubt my go-to staple item.

So stop me from salivating over here already! Old Navy, I’m crushing on your mammoth supply of cardigans right now.

Oh, the ruffles! The flowers! The unabashed femininity!

And for only $26.50 a pop?! I want to go to there.

And then …

So it seems that the ampersand must be universally loved.

Get your fix at my newest daily obsession Ampersand Ampersand. They will feature the classically quirky shape via a different font each and every day and a link to the coordinating font shop.

And that’s just fine with us!

So many books, so little time

It might be rather obvious why most of these particular titles are being highlighted: most are for more practical reasons and some for inspiration. (See the visual candy with the cupcakes!)

But the embarrassing point is this: these all need to be well read and dog-eared by now. But alas, most sit unopened on the bookshelf or rest in a virtual shopping bag still do be purchased.

No more excuses: 2010 is the year of the reader!

King Ranch Casserole

With our mini-arctic blast here in Dallas comes all the good eats, such as these go-to staple foods: ice cream (so, so good when it’s freezing outside), my famous chili and the King Ranch Casserole.

Go grab your best Le Creuset, ladies and gents, because we’re cookin’ up a Texas tradition today. Oh! And because I simply must cook to some decent tunes, may I highly recommend some Arcade Fire to keep things spicy? Yes, please.

Geeky Side Note: The Target by my home finally got a teeny-tiny grocery store (yays!!!), so most of what went into this dish was the Archer Farms brand. Gotta love a good knock-off.

Ingredients
• 4-5 boneless chicken breasts
• 1 can chicken broth
• 1 can cream of mushroom
• 1 can cream of chicken
• 1 can Rotel
• Frozen and pre-sliced red peppers/green peppers/onion mix
• Handful of frozen corn
• Spices to taste, including: black pepper, minced onion, paprika, jalapeno pepper, garlic and onion powder
• White corn tortillas
• 3 cups mixed cheeses, including: cheddar, monterrey jack and queso blanco
• EVVO

Directions
Using a stock pot, boil chicken breasts in 1 can chicken broth and 2 cans water. Make sure chicken is submerged. Once cooked, shred to the consistency of your liking.

Mix together remaining ingredients in a separate bowl, minus tortillas and 1 cup of cheese mixture.

Line casserole dish in a bit of EVVO, including sides. Spread a layer of chicken on the bottom, then a layer of your soup mixture. Strip tortillas in slices and place one layer on top. Repeat these layered steps, ending in the remaining cup of cheese. Bake on 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Nest, cover dish in foil and bake an additional 15 minutes, as to not over-cook cheese on top. Viola!

Kristina’s Tips: Ouch! I completely forgot to add the Rotel, yet the KRC was still quite yummy. Also, I would recommend adding a dash of cilantro for garnish, which I also forgot. Sheesh …

Shakin’ in my boots

So yeah, it’s a tad chilly here … more like the coldest I can remember in years actually. It’s predicted to only get up to 28 degrees today here in Big D.

28!!! That’s mighty cold in my humble opinion.

So I’m wearing these quirky Danexx boots I scored thifting last weekend. They are not only lined with a fun plaid flannel, but the leather is like butter.

For realz, I’m totally smitten with them. Sadly, I don’t think the brand is in business anymore. But if you’d like fetch your own pair, I found tons for bid on eBay.
